SUCCESS STORY OF RUBINA RAMESH IN THE FIELD OF WRITING

SUCCESS STORY OF RUBINA RAMESH IN THE FIELD OF WRITING

RUBINA RAMESH

BRIEF PROFILE OF THE AUTHOR

Rubina Ramesh is an avid reader, writer, blogger, book reviewer and marketer. She is the founder of The Book Club, an online book publicity group. Her first literary work was published in her school magazine. It gave her immense pride to see her own name at the bottom of the article. She was about 8 years old at that time. She then went to complete her MBA and after her marriage to her childhood friend, her travel saga started. From The Netherlands to the British Isles, she lived her life like an adventure. After a short stint in Malaysia, she finally settled down in the desert state of the USA, Arizona. Living with her DH and two human kids and one doggie kid, Rubina has finally started living the life she had always dreamed about - that of a writer.

---------------------------------------------------

Q  Are you a professional writer?

I wish I could say that but I can’t even say it’s a hobby. Call it a burning passion that I am fighting tooth and nail every day, just to write a few lines.

----------------------------------------------------

Q  What is your specific field of writing?

Romance and Fantasy. I love both the genres so I combined them with “Asherah: A Warrior Princess”. I am planning a sequel on those lines. And next year, I plan to write only paranormal romance.

-----------------------------------------------------

Q  Are there any specific reasons for choosing this particular field?

That of a writer or romance writer? Let me go with being a writer. I used to travel a lot. Every three years my dad would get a transfer. So writing diaries was my best friend. I suppose I should thank that habit of mine.

--------------------------------------------------------

Q . Which particular book of yours do you consider as the best so far, and why?

“Destined”. I am playing favourites here. But Esha of Destined has touched many women’s lives, including mine. I have readers writing to me regarding how they could fight for their rights or their parent’s rights after reading my book. And a few men did write to me saying that I have shown men as heartless and money minded. Well, all I can say is that they must not have read the whole book.

--------------------------------------------------------

Q  Did you receive appreciation/recognition/adequate sales for your books? What is your own assessment?

I am an indie author. A proud one at that. KDP dashboard is my appreciation and the emails and reviews from my readers are the recognitions. So I think I have collected a fair share of them. I am grateful to the readers & reviewers for every word posted for me. Regarding my own assessment, I would say “How can I not love my babies!!”

----------------------------------------------------------

Q  Who is your role model?

My mirror. My struggles and my small victories teach me every day, what I have achieved and what I can.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Q  Which other author’s books, do you feel, come close to your style of writing?

I have read most of the authors & many of them are my friends. Each one has a distinct writing style and none of us ape each other. I might be inspired to write from other stories, especially, the imageries that are created while reading a book or watching a movie. But same style is very difficult to copy.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Q  Do you promote and recommend writing of books jointly? In your opinion what are the areas of benefits and problems, in such joint ventures?

I know of authors who have done it beautifully. But knowing my temperament I don’t think I can. I am too stuck up with my story line. I have a tough time listening even to my editors, so working with another author is not possible. I have tried it. But it’s dying a slow death even in our minds. But who knows? Never say, never.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Q  When & how do you get the ideas & do you immediately note them down in a diary or elsewhere?

The truth is that I start with a blank canvas. I never know where I am going with the characters or to which point they will go. I walk with them as they show me the path. The reasoning I can give you is once I write, I am bored. So once it’s out of my head, it loses its novelty. As for, where do ideas come from - even the questions you have asked are triggering a story in me.

-------------------------------------------------------

Q  Could you share with us, an interesting event/incident/experience faced with the other writers, publishers or readers in your writing career?

My first book was not a book, but a story in an anthology. It was with a small publisher and I was very excited. It was a story of an incident that had happened in my life. Since it was a competition, we had to get our friends to vote and comment. So there was another writer whose friends came and thrashed by story and said that since it’s a real story, I didn’t have to work too hard on it. That was my first face off with criticism in public. After that I made it a point, never to write for an anthology, never to react to criticism and never ever accept any publisher who had no respect for anyone’s story.

--------------------------------------------------------

Q  Besides the quality of writing, in your opinion, what are the other factors for the success of a book? On an average, how many months do you take to complete one book, in all respects?

Book cover, never neglect it.  Editing bites you in your pocket but is a necessary evil. Then marketing - if you have the guts to write, you should have the lungs to scream about it. About the time taken it can be 4 months to one year, depending on where my life is at that point of time.

--------------------------------------------------------

Q  Has Facebook helped you in any way, in your writing career or even otherwise? If yes, please elucidate.

You and I met on Facebook, right? Like that so many readers and fellow authors have come together due to our dear Facebook. Don’t underestimate the power of Facebook.

---------------------------------------------------------

Q  In your opinion, is there adequate scope for name/fame/wealth in the field of writing? Which aspects motivate you to write books? Earning money/publicity/helping readers/self-satisfaction/others?.

Name and fame, may be and wealth - depends. If you write one book and expect it be become the next Harry Potter, don’t forget, it’s a series. Regarding aspects motivating for writing, my answer is “Each one of them and more, but may not be in that order.”

----------------------------------------------------------

Q  What are the reasons for the general success of the concept of “Agents of writers” in some countries?

They are the keys to the lock that the authors can’t open otherwise. It depends also on the fact what an author wants. If you want to be a trad published author - you need them. If you want to be an indie author - well, you have to be that key.

----------------------------------------------------------

Q  If you were not a writer, in what other way, you would have expressed your creativity?

Web-designing. I am going to start something new soon and will update as soon as I am done. I feel that it would be good for the authors.

--------------------------------------------------------

Q  Have your family members and friends helped and/or contributed in any way, in your writing career?

Friends have contributed a LOT. I am damn lucky that way. Family leaves me alone when I write. My kids know that mommy is busy now and they won’t disturb me when I do sit down to write. That’s help enough.

--------------------------------------------------------

Q  What is your opinion about e-books? Due to this concept of e-books, is the survival of printed books in future in jeopardy?

This is a tricky question. There was a time when I loved paperbacks. But today when I can carry hundreds, if not thousands of books in my kindle, why should I be happy with anything less?

-------------------------------------------------------

Q  What is your future plan for writing books?

This year I have a series of three, based on the life of Maya coming out. One fantasy and my next is a short rom-com called The Imperfect Bride.

---------------------------------------------------------

Q  What is your advice to the budding authors?

Just write – publish--write and there is no other mantra. Don’t go for buy backs. It will sadden you when you get your KDP report. No money earned and all money gone. So giving false projections with buy backs is stupidity, since you are not gaining any readers. But then I am a firm believer of,  “to each his own”. That’s my mantra.

-------------------------------------------------------
Q  Are you a professional writer? What is your specific field of writing?

Yes, I am a professional writer. I have many interests. Initially I did not write for publication, but only for a need, when I was pushed to submit, I did, got accepted and found writing helped my sanity, when I was the care giver for my husband for twelve plus years. Now I write & edit because, it is a love. I write on various topics e.g. Children's Stories; Young Adult stories; Family Stories; Articles – Health, Life Style: Psychology. Short Stories- Ghost, adventure, science fiction, fantasy, Noir comedy; Love; Family. Poetry – Prayers, Admonishing; Social issues: anti-war, exploitation in any areas; Love – unconditional, carnal, brotherly; nature; life in general.

----------------------------------------------------

Q  Which particular book of yours do you consider as the best so far, and why?

l consider my present book as my best. It is part of my God series and is entitled God's Love, that is to be published this month & deals with my childhood – the story of why I am, as I am.

-------------------------------------------------------

Q Do you promote and recommend writing of books jointly? In your opinion what are the areas of benefits and problems, in such joint ventures?

Recently I had teamed up with other poets to publish and it was an easy transition. My Young adult fantasy adventure was written to dovetail into a series of books with another author who is no longer writing and I have my rights back on the book. I found it, the most difficult story to write. I had to follow a focal point script but was given the leeway to get from each point to point. My style of writing consists of a general idea with an end point, research if I do not know the subject intimately, start to write and let the characters spin the story.

----------------------------------------------------------

Q When & how do you get the ideas & do you immediately note them down in a diary or elsewhere?

Anything can trigger a story. Usually I start typing immediately.

--------------------------------------------------------

Q On an average, how many months do you take to complete one book, in all respects?

When I do the poetry books with many authors it takes months. I am dealing with many cultures and languages. I have meetings with the authors and on usages of words and sometimes translations are not clear from one language to another.

But my own children's books take the longest because I must wait on my illustrator – my youngest son who does the drawings but then I do the coloration and they are water color pens and one illustration can take a full day & there are usually ten to twelve illustrations per book.

The story itself depends on what is going on in my life – anywhere from one day to a week in finishing writing, a day to do editing, reading it aloud to one of my sons and have him point out lack of clarity. A children's book takes up to a month to produce.

The adult stories take a couple of days. When I start a story I continue to write until I am done. Then I look for errors, any dead ends & then grammar etc.  I write short stories, anywhere from a couple thousand to ten thousand words. My short stories have been ready to publish but I don't have enough to make a book. They are however, on sites around the net to read in pre-edit form.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Q Could you share with us, an interesting event/incident/experience faced with the other writers, publishers or readers in your writing career?

I was getting ready to write a story and ended up in the hospital with an injury.  I do not like waiting to write, if I have a story to tell. So here I was lying on a gurney in line to go into the MRI machine at the local hospital; I was the third in line. As the procedure usually takes less than half an hour, I figured that I'd be out in about an hour or so, as the first person just went in on an emergency basis.  I started to write and edit the story in my head thinking I'd at least get a start on the book and when I get home, to start writing it.  In reality it was several hours later that  I was being moved into the MRI room. I was then chatting with the woman whom I knew, as I have been accident prone and had been there before. It seems that the emergency person had sprayed his hair with a dying chemical that had metal shavings as a component and his hair caught fire. It was a big lesson for us to know what is in the product we are using. When I got home I had the book typed out in hours as all the avenues I was going to run down had been done in my head. The book that was written on the gurney including editing is titled “Mason and the Rainbow Bridge”. It is in one of the Peacock Writers book where the theme was death.

-------------------------------------------------------

Q In your opinion, besides the quality of writing, what are the other factors for the success of a book?

Marketing to the correct audience. Even if a book is considered dreadful by mainstream or indie, there is always a market, which we should find out and market it to them.

---------------------------------------------------

Q Which aspects motivate you to write books? Earning money/publicity/helping readers/self-satisfaction/others?.

My career started as a need, turned into a necessity to keep my sanity dealing with being a caretaker of an overactive personality and then morphed back into a love of words. I've earned little money so far, as most of my writing has been and still is for charity.  But I have young fans all over the world, who enjoy my children books.

-----------------------------------------------------

Q Has Facebook helped you in anyway, in your writing career or even otherwise? If yes, please elucidate?

Yes and no, until I became involved with the “Every Child Lifeline Charity Foundation”, when I got targeted by a troll, a stalker and a hacker, when Facebook was helpful. Now I have an impersonator that goes into groups pretending to be me and being nasty.

--------------------------------------------------------

Q In your opinion, is there adequate scope for name/fame/wealth in the field of writing?

Yes, of course. But the artist field has not changed much over the years.

--------------------------------------------------------

Q What are the reasons for the general success of the concept of “Agents of writers” in some countries?

If one can afford to hire an agent then one has help in getting success. That is why in today's cyber society we have Artist groups who help one another with their talents. In today's world, writing is not considered a bad occupation for a woman to engage in.

----------------------------------------------------

Q Have your family members and friends helped and/or contributed in any way, in your writing career?

My youngest son has been my children's books illustrator and now on Tik Tok. My middle son is a musician and writer who has yet to publish. My oldest son promotes me to everyone and he also gets me in, on some of his Tik Tok videos.  My adopted or mentored children are all artists of every sort & I am happy to see them all, using their talents for enjoyment and for profit.

---------------------------------------------------

Q What is your opinion about e-books? Due to this concept of e-books, is the survival of printed books in future in jeopardy?

I love e-books, because I have lymph edema, a condition I inherited from my two stints with cancer treatment. I carry thousands of books with me on a sliver of technology. I would love to see them start marketing school books on this medium. There is a similar technology with audio books and they are a boon to those with sight impairment.

---------------------------------------------------

Q What are your future plans for writing books?

I am a partner and co-founder in Tea Luck Publishing, where I am also publishing the charity books for the Every Child Lifeline Charity Foundation. I see no end to my writing, research, or teaching and producing until my spirit departs.

---------------------------------------------------

Q What is your advice to the budding authors?

He or she should not get discouraged. If one has a burning desire to write, one should bring it out, put it on paper or to technology, but it must be done. Bad grammar and bad spelling can always be corrected by a good editor and without losing the fire in the story. The detractors must be ignored.  Everyone does have a story to tell, for which the medium and fans must be found. One should not expect to get rich but if one does rich, one should help the next person to be as good in writing. In case the one whom we taught becomes better than us, we should wear that as a badge of honour.

CONTRIBUTION OF SARAH BOWMAN AS A CHILDREN’S WRITER

CONTRIBUTION OF SARAH BOWMAN AS A CHILDREN’S WRITER

SARAH BOWMAN

BRIEF PROFILE OF THE AUTHOR:

Sarah Bowman is a Children’s Author, Storyteller, educator, wife and mother. She enjoys nature and feels that God speaks to her through nature.  Sarah is also a certified yoga instructor and loves to help and inspire others to become what God has designed them to be.

----------------------------------------------------------

Q Are you a professional writer? How many of your books have been published so far?

Yes, I am a professional writer. I have been a Published Amazon Author since 2010. I have twenty- five published books.

---------------------------------------------------------

Q What is your specific field of writing?

I am a Children’s Author. However, I have also written poetry and have two Published Christian books.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Q Are there any specific reasons for choosing this particular field?

Yes, I have always had a very vivid imagination, even as a child. Children’s books allow me to relive the innocence of my youth. Writing Children’s Literature helps me, not to take life too seriously and that there is always room for magic and fantasy.  My books are very colorful and sugary sweet so to speak and very magical and whimsical.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Q What has been the general assessment of the reviewers & readers for your books?

I have always done well, with my books, especially in the United Kingdom and Japan. Also, all my books are available in audio format.

------------------------------------------------------------

Q What is your own general assessment of your books?

I love my books, but just as any writer. I feel that there is a lot of improvement to be done and that I am always improving. I am always learning new styles of writing and challenging myself. I feel that no one ever reaches that perfect place in their writings. There are always some things to learn, ways to improve and perfect our craft.

------------------------------------------------------------

Q Who is your role model?

I have never looked at many people as “role models”. I look to God, mostly. I also admire Mother Teresa. But, I would love to say Dr. Suess, because a lot of my stories are very silly and very easy to read.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Q Do you promote and recommend writing books jointly? In your opinion what are the areas of benefits and problems, in such joint ventures?

I have no objections to promoting and joining forces with other writers. However, I have always remained solo.

-------------------------------------------------------

Q When & how do you get the ideas & do you immediately note them down in a diary or elsewhere?

Most of my ideas come from things which I have lived in my life. However, anything can inspire me. I will jot words down in rough draft writing, quite a bit. However, I am more of a feel, the emotion writer. I write when I feel the emotion to write.

---------------------------------------------------------

Q  How did you assess the success of your books in the world, through receiving appreciation/recognition, adequate sales or in any other way?

Success can be measured in so many different ways. A person can be successful, without making tons of money, if their writings have touched or helped someone.  To become a writer, you have to really love writing and words. If that isn’t what fuels your writing, then you will not succeed, in this industry.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Q Which aspects motivate you to write books? Earning money/publicity/helping readers/self-satisfaction/others?.

Making others happy is what motivates my writings. If I can make at least one person smile, I have done my job as a writer.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Q Has Facebook helped you in any way, in your writing career or even otherwise? If yes, please elucidate.

Yes, Facebook has helped me quite a bit with advertisement of my books.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Q In your opinion, is there adequate scope for name/fame/wealth in the field of writing?

I feel that there is a lot of wealth and fame in writing. However, it takes some time to achieve that. But, we should not make fame our priority in writing. A true writer just wants his story told.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Q If you were not a writer, in what other way, you would have expressed your creativity?

I think, I would have always been a writer. However, if not, then as a person, I would have used music and/or painting to express my creativity.

------------------------------------------------------------

Q Have your family members and friends helped and/or contributed in any way, in your writing career?

I have some great friends, who have encouraged me along the way.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Q What is your opinion about e-books? Due to this concept of e-books, is the survival of printed books in future in jeopardy?

I prefer paperback or audio books, but e-books are the way of the future.  I feel that they are fine, as long as the story is told.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Q What is your advice to the budding authors?

They should continue to write books.  Writing gives us an identity, not sure who we would be without it. They should just not give up but keep writing, perfecting their works, doing what makes them feel happy and inspired. They should keep money and fame last on their list, so that they can really enjoy writing. They should fall in love with their work.
